What Is Hypnosis?
So what is the definition of hypnosis? Hypnosis is a "state of attentive, responsive concentration
characterized by heightened suggestibility." In hypnosis, you narrow your normal perspective – much like
narrowing the focus of a wide-angle lens. You temporarily tune out everyday concerns so that you can focus on the issue
at hand.
In hypnosis, you characteristically (but not always) experience a profound
state of relaxation. And in this state, you can access the subconscious (creative, emotional) mind while giving your
conscious (logical, analytical) mind a rest. While your
conscious mind is in a state of deep relaxation, your subconscious mind is available as a source of knowledge and wisdom.
It holds all your memories, as well as your dreams, motivations, and desires. You can draw upon the wisdom hidden there
to make new, informed decisions about your future behavior. You can also change old, outmoded ideas that no longer serve
you.
Can a hypnotist or hypnotherapist make you do something you do not want to do? Absolutely
not! All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. This means that without cooperation from you, the client, nothing will
happen. You are in charge, you control the session.
